[-] MOTORCYCLE HELMET LAWS

Time and again we have seen that motorcycle helmets tend to be the difference between an animal and a vegetable. This statement may sound 'crude' to the sensitive minds, but the facts all point to its truth. Motorcycle helmet laws are a means to cutting down the number of fatalities in motorcycle accidents. It is certainly no secret that in the case of a motorcycle crash, the riders come out second best almost all the time. Therefore, motorcycle helmet laws can, and are, playing a big role in decreasing the rider fatality rates.

Motorcycle Helmet Laws in UK

In UK, the motorcycle helmet laws apply to all riders; there is no segregation of age or experience. Each rider and pillion passenger has to wear a British standard 6658 certified Motorcycle helmet or a helmet stamped with the new mark of approval, UN ECE 22.05. The helmet, according to the motorcycle helmet laws, has to have the CBI kitemark. These specifications mean that the helmet is able to take a certain degree of impact, reducing the risk of brain damage to a bare minimum.

In addition, the motorcycle helmet laws require the riders to secure the helmets properly, merely because the helmet won't do you much good sitting on the ground, in case of a spill.

The Controversy

Notwithstanding this common sense stuff, there are people who still argue that the motorcycle helmet laws take away their liberty to make choices for themselves. Differences of opinion are always welcome in democracies; so they rave on their views and the government does its job, trying to satisfy both sides.

However, the government has to answer for the rising number of fatalities in motorcycle accidents, consequently the legislators have taken the view that if anyone wants to play with fire, they have to stop him before he harms himself, or others in the process.

That is about all the logic that sums up the motorcycle helmet laws. So why not comply, and make our highways a safer place to travel.
